While the weather may be mild and the days sunny, the season still arrives here in the Lowcountry and we like to do it up in grand style. Thanks to the warmer days, we can get out and install more lights, enjoy holiday walks with family and tour all the architectural beauty of Charleston-area homes.
Here’s a quick recap of holiday happenings in and around Charleston this December:
Walk Through History
Throughout December, the Charleston Strolls Holiday Walking Tour invites you to meander through the streets of historic downtown Charleston (one of the best ways to see all the gorgeous homes, in our opinion) and enjoy the addition of holiday décor. On your stroll, you’ll visit the Four Corners of Law, the Battery, private neighborhoods and conclude at the lovely Mills House Hotel for holiday refreshments. Along the way, guides will also share information about the Holy City’s history.
Visit a Charleston Holiday Classic
Every year, the James Island County Park West of the Ashley River in Charleston hosts its Holiday Festival of Lights. Load up as many as you can fit in your car and slowly drive through the magnificent light display, featuring Lowcountry specialties like the Ravenel Bridge, Rainbow Row and plenty of sea life. Stop to roast marshmallows, sip on hot chocolate and ride the carousel midway through. The event runs through Dec. 31.
Meet Santa Under the Sea
Only in Charleston can you greet Santa while he scuba dives! The South Carolina Aquarium offers kids the chance to meet “Scuba Claus” as he dives into the Great Ocean Tank. There’s also a new character in on the act “Shark on a Shelf.” Scuba Claus will be around daily at 11 a.m. till December 23.
Party at the Pubs
If you want to liven up your holiday celebration a bit, enjoy Charleston’s Holiday Pub Crawl. The two-and-a-half-hour event takes you to some of downtown’s oldest and most historic taverns and pubs for appetizers and treats, pints, Christmas Ale and more. $30/person. Runs 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. daily through January 10, 2014.
Plays, Music and More
Charleston also offers plenty of traditional Christmas-time fare in the form of music and theater. The Charleston Christmas Special plays at the Charleston Music Hall through Dec. 22 and offers holiday songs and dances galore. Take in a classic retelling of “A Christmas Carol” at the Footlight Players Theater through Dec. 22 or listen to Christmas tunes performed by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra at their Holiday Pops concert, Holiday Brass concert or the Holy City Messiah concert performed in both downtown Charleston and Summerville.
